Gold Coast’s oldest suburb-historic Southport is an attractive, blue chip residential area and thriving commercial district, in northern Gold Coast, near Surfers Paradise. It’s a vibrant, busy part of Gold Coast City, with over 8,000 registered businesses. Many of the 15,000 people living in Southport work there too. Southport boasts a variety of housing types ranging from modern apartment developments to Australian dream executive homes, classic cottages and historic Queenslanders. The streets are green and leafy with some fabulous gardens on show. |

Southport is not resting on its laurels. There is plenty of new development in the works, including high rise commercial and residential development and a makeover for the parklands along the Broadwater. The Broadwater area, already popular as a base for water recreation is undergoing a 17 million dollar re-fit, as a multi-purpose community space. Stage one of the development is complete, and includes a 100 metre pier with views across to Surfers Paradise, a giant events lawn, a pavilion building and a shady avenue of fig trees. Migrants who choose to settle in Southport will find plenty to enjoy in one of Gold Coast's premier residential locations. Two of the Coasts longest established public schools are based in Southport: St Hilda’s for girls and The Southport School for boys have both produced generations of successful alumni. Other schools in the suburb include the Southport State School and Southport State High School, The Catholic Aquinas College years 8-12, the Southport Special School years for students with identified disabilities, and The Queensland Academy for Health Sciences, a selective senior secondary state high school, years 10-12, offering university accredited accelerated learning programmes in journalism and law, as well as health sciences. |
