Fremantle, or ‘Freo’ to the locals, is the main port of Western Australia. It is 19 kilometres from the Perth CBD, South West over the mouth of the Swan River.  Now a suburb of Perth, Fremantle was a separate city for most of its history. It has been an active port ever since the Swan River Colony was established in 1829, and is one of the best preserved working ports anywhere, of the 19th century.

If you move to Fremantle you can have all the opportunities of a large thriving city and the charm and ambience of an historic town. More than 150 Fremantle buildings have protected National Trust status, and many more have recognised historic value.  Even getting the groceries is fun when you can shop at the Fremantle Markets - built as a produce and wholesale market in 1897. The Kailis fish market has been going since 1928 and is famous throughout Australia for its fresh fish stalls and seafood restaurants.

Fremantle shares the Mediterranean climate of Perth. Summer is hot and dry, often around 30° Celsius in the daytime.  In the afternoon the ‘Fremantle doctor’ blows in off the Indian Ocean to cool things down for the night. Winter is wetter, but not much, with pleasant daytime temperatures around 18°. Springtime brings the famous western Australian wildflowers, and migrants who like to garden will be happy to know you can grow a wide selection of flowers and vegetables all year round.

There are several state and private schools in Fremantle. If you have children gifted in fine art, dance, theatre or music; apply for a coveted place at The John Curtin College of the Art. Children who live in the North Freemantle catchment zone have automatic entry. The University of Notre Dame has a Fremantle campus, and Perth offers four other universities not very far away. There are very good public hospitals in Fremantle and East Fremantle.
